Moving Towards a Total Return Approach in Diversified Portfolios

Given that most traditional liquid markets offer little more than market beta, institutional investors have been considering how to evolve the management of their balanced portfolios from a benchmark approach towards a total return approach. However, there is no doubt that this transformation will require more than a simple relaxation of the investment guidelines.

The sources of returns provided by traditional balanced portfolios often suffer from a lack of diversification with too much concentration of the active risk in the equity bucket and on the tactical allocation between the fixed income and equities buckets. New strategies developed so far to help diversifying the sources of a portfolio’s return have tended to exclusively rely on quantitative models.

In this workshop, AXA Investment Managers will share with investors how advanced diversified strategies can help to morph fundamental views on a broader number of asset classes into well calibrated investment decisions. At AXA, the belief is that such an approach could help to build robust and diversified total return portfolios with Libor + or inflation + targets.
