Canada Pension Plan Investment Board
CPP Investments took top marks for unmatched institutional scale and execution across the whole energy system, managing over €91bn in real assets out of €444bn total AUM.
Judges contrasted this with peers that treat energy transition narrowly as buying wind, solar or battery assets. Instead, CPP leads market-defining deals spanning regulated utilities, renewable power, long-distance transmission grids, storage, midstream infrastructure and even AI power infrastructure.
Its Sustainable Energies Group (C$38.7bn) and infrastructure book (C$69.9bn) sit under three pillars, affordability, security and decarbonisation, reflecting a whole-system view that balances near-term reliability with long-term decarbonisation goals. Performance jumped to 8.7% in 2025 from 2% in 2024, supporting the case.
The sheer breadth, from emerging markets to advanced grid technology, and the ability to support businesses through multiple growth phases rather than chasing isolated assets, made this a clear winner in a crowded category. Judges were also convinced by the whole energy system perspective, balancing near-term needs with long-term decarbonisation without losing sight of affordability and security
Highly Commended
