Judges highlighted two concrete examples: Return Storage, a battery platform where APG committed €300m of growth capital to expand capacity from 70MW towards approximately 450MW, and SkyNRG, a sustainable jet fuel producer backed with €250m.

Both investments came with board seats and real governance influence rather than a passive cheque, and both were designed to build scalable platforms rather than fund individual projects, adding value creation at the platform level itself.

Judges agreed with APG's underlying thesis that the most attractive opportunities emerge before a sector reaches institutional scale, where ownership models and financing structures have not yet matured, and felt both case studies genuinely required transformation from early-stage company into an institutional investment category rather than being straightforward scale-ups. The active ownership model applied here goes beyond typical value-add practice, judges noted, reflecting real conviction in early-stage platform-building. One judge summed it up simply as an impressive platform and a well-executed submission.
