Preventable Surprises

Raj Thamotheram is a pioneer in the field of long-term, responsible investing. He is currently the Founder and Chair of Preventable Surprises, a successor project to the Network for Sustainable Financial Markets, which he also co-founded. Thamotheram has worked in the investment industry for 12 years in senior positions first at the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) and then with AXA Investment Managers. At USS, he specialised in collaborative stewardship projects and played a lead role in the Institutional Investor Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), the Enhanced Analytics Initiative (EAI) and PharmaFutures. At AXA, he initiated the strategy to mainstream ESG integration across all asset classes and spearheaded the launch of the AXA Framlington Human Capital Fund. Global Proxy Watch named him “one of the 10 most influential figures in the corporate governance field” in 2004 and 2008, and he appeared in Independent Research in Responsible Investment global poll’s top 10 "Most positive contributors to SRI & CG" in 2017 and 2018. Thamotheram writes a column for IPE called “Long Term Matters” and lectures widely.
