Mary Robinson was President of the Republic of Ireland from 1990-97 before serving as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. After leaving the UN, she founded Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative and served as its president. In 2007, she was selected by Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu to become a founding member of The Elders, a group of world leaders committed to tackling the world’s toughest problems. In 2010, she founded the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice, a centre for thought leadership, education and advocacy for the poor and disempowered by climate change and has subsequently served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region of Africa, Special Envoy on Climate Change, and Special Envoy on El Niño and Climate. President Robinson is a member of the Club of Madrid, former chair of the Council of Women World Leaders and serves on numerous boards including the European Climate Foundation. Since 1998, she has also served as Chancellor of The University of Dublin (Trinity College). In her earlier career, she was a lawyer for women’s and human rights. She has taught at Trinity College Law, served in the Irish Senate, and co-founded the Irish Centre for European Law at Trinity College. A graduate of University of Dublin (Trinity College), King’s Inns Dublin and Harvard Law School, she is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama, and honorary doctorates from more than 40 of the world’s most elite universities.
