Photis Lysandrou

Research Professor, City University of London

Photis Lysandrou is Research Professor at the City Political Economy Research Centre (CITYPERC), Department of International Politics, City St George's, University of London. He previously taught at Queen Mary University of London, the University of Greenwich, and London Metropolitan University, where he was Lead Professor in Economics. His research focuses on financialisation, shadow banking, corporate governance, and the political economy of the international currency system, including the structural underpinnings of dollar hegemony. His most recent book, Dollar Dominance: Why It Rules the Global Economy and How to Challenge It (Bristol University Press, 2025), asks why the dollar continues to dominate the global economy despite repeated shocks, from the 2008 financial crisis through COVID-19 to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He argues that global instability itself pushes investors toward the perceived safety of the dollar, reinforcing rather than eroding its dominance, and sets out the financial foundations that would need to shift for a rival currency such as the euro to genuinely challenge its position.
